When my fingers hurt after too much time on the keyboard, I... do stretching exercises. Stretch open, with fingers apart, then close tight with fingers balled as fist. Sometimes add an extra 'step' bending fingers tightly at middle knuckles.

What really helped me improve my typing speed is... simply typing on a regular basis. When not, I lose some speed, but seem able to retain the habit of good accuracy.

Learned to type in high school, many decades ago, back when it was required to learn on a manual, as well as electric. In fact, to this day, because of learning on a manual, (as my son describes it) I "pound" the keys. Why don't use often at library, because it can be disturbing to others - the noise of it.

However, typing, for me has been (as they say) like riding a bike. Even after years of no typing, I have been able to take a test in the 50's wpm with 3 or less mistakes. I am thankful. It is one of my extremely useful 'acquired' habits learned!!
