A legal duty to act may arise from a voluntary assumption of care. General intent requires that the defendant be aware that he is acting in a proscribed way and that any attendant circumstances required by the crime are present. Under modern statutes, what is the difference between a principal and an accomplice to a crime? A principal possesses the requisite intent and actually commits the crime. An accomplice to a crime possesses the intent that the crime be committed and aids, counsels, or encourages the principal before or during the commission of the crime.
