- Setting the record straight
It has been commonly said that money is the root of all evil. That is one of the most misquoted verses in the entire Bible. It does not say that. It says the love of money, not money itself, is a root of all evil. There is a big difference. That $20 bill in your pocket is not in and of itself evil. Without money we could not buy food and other necessities. But when money takes priority over decency, then there is a problem.

- We just can't get it right
Those that do not learn from the mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat them. Those that do learn from those mistakes will find other ways to screw up. We just can't win for losing, dang it.

Bill Gates never finished college. Steve Jobs dropped out of college after one year. Michael Dell attended the University of Texas and never finished. Did their lack of education stop them? No, it did not. They refused to listen to those that said their ideas wouldn't work. Some of those same people ended up working for Microsoft, Apple, or Dell Computer.

It is important that people find jobs that are a good fit for them. It is also important that employers recognize when they have good employees and do what it takes to retain them. There is a statistic I once heard; I'm not sure of the original source but I'm inclined to believe it, that money is the number one thing that attracts people to a job, but it is the number six thing that keeps them there.

President Washington began this tradition in 1790 after reminding the nation that the destiny of self-government and the preservation of the sacred fire of liberty is finally staked on the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people. For our friends in the press who place a high premium on accuracy, let me say: I did not actually hear George Washington say that. But it is a matter of historic record.

When I was in my late teens and lived at home I thought I knew everything I needed to know. Then in my early twenties I left home and found out that I didn't know diddly-squat. Now I'm in my fifties and I like to think that I have at least one or two things figured out by now.
