New Shtokavian dialects (which form the basis of standard language) allow two tones on stressed syllables and have distinctive vowel length and so distinguish four combinations, called pitch accent: short falling, short rising, long falling, and long rising. Most speakers from Serbia and Croatia do not distinguish between short rising and short falling tones.
