The second bought some sticks, but they still did not fill the room. The third man bought two things that filled the room, so he obtained his father's fortune. What were the two things he bought?

One single gas molecule would have done the same. Okay, then make it a few: a tiny bit of a mercaptan or a sulphide. Maybe cadaverine or putrescine. Or going to a better direction: a tiny drop of a peppermint oil. That's not expensive.
