The first grade classroom spilled over with students. There were 70 in a room that looked as though its capacity was half that. The children sat on rows of long benches, crammed close together. Lacking desks, they balanced notebooks on bony, little knees. Eager to learn more I peppered the headmaster with questions. I found it hard to imagine a world in which something as random as where you were born could result in lifelong illiteracy. Had I taken my own education for granted?
