umvard, that does not follow. A murderer, by definition, is one who prevents *other* individuals from following *their own* values. Therefore a murder is an example of Hayek's principle in action, not a counter example. Hayek is arguing that each individual not not only has the right to follow his own values, but that freedom dictates that he must, at the same time, allow all other individuals to do the same.

This means that not all personal values are equally valid. If your values, by definition, require you to impinge upon the liberty of others, your values violate the principle of human dignity, and thus are curtailed by the society as a whole, and you are not allowed to act upon them without consequences.

The problem with this quote is that it is false. What about murderers? Shall they be allowed to follow their "values." Surely not. The value of freedom is not to have it, but to use it well.
