George Graham Vest - Eulogy of the Dog (3 of 3)
If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies, and when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even in death.

George Graham Vest - Eulogy of the Dog (2 of 3)
A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer; he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains.

George Graham Vest - Eulogy of the Dog (1 of 3)
The best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. The one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog.

Unknown - The last word
When you're fighting with someone in the car, don't slam the door behind you. Just leave it open. It's worse because it makes them get up to close it. You don't get the satisfying slam, but you do get the last word.

Dick Masterson - December
Why does anyone pretend to work in December? Nobody gets anything done. You're just showing up at your office, killing time and shopping for your ungrateful family. That's what December's all about.

Unknown - The English Channel cat race
An English cat named One Two Three and a French cat named Un Deux Trois organized a boat race across the English Channel. The English cat won, because the Un Deux Trois cat sank.

Atrus - Riven epilogue
Now I understand. Endings and beginnings are within the Fissure, that Riven-cleft of stars that acts as both a wall and a bridge; and though I am unable to understand how, the very flow of stars that brought my Myst book into worthy hands, I am sure served as a safe passage home for my friend. The age of Riven is closed forever, but the people of Riven are free, and now I am at rest, understanding that in books, and ages, and life, the ending can never truly be written.
