The Things That You Think - Nick Hornby

This quote wurde hinzugefügt von betty_d
In 1450, there were about a hundred new books published. Last year, there were more than a million. A new book comes out every 30 seconds. It would take you fifteen years just to read all of the titles of every book ever printed! And you're going to watch TV tonight? Fair enough, I suppose.

Ha! I'll agree that he can be a bit much at times, however, I urge you to stick with it - in my opinion he's one of the most brilliant, hilarious and engaging modern writers

The euphemisms. Some of his euphemisms are pretty cringe-worthy. I mean "peach-fish"?!!I Just ew. But, I'm trying to be a grown up and get passed it. : D

@betty_d, I'm glad you're giving Tom Robbins another try and hope that you enjoy it. I'm curious as to what made you give up when you tried a few years ago. As for John Steinbeck, I agree with you - Sweet Thursday was definitely kind of "meh" and I also agree that The Winter of Our Discontent is by far his best work

@weesin -Yes, I've read everything by Hornby. : ) Based on your suggestion, I am trying Still Life With Woodpecker. I tried reading it years ago, and gave up after the first few pages. I am giving it a second shot. As far as recommendations go, I don't want to personally recommend something that you might hate, so I will just say this: Christopher Moore is kind of local to me, so he frequently does appearances and signings in my area. I think I've been to 2 of his signings. He always talks about his favorite book, Sweet Thursday by John Steinbeck (it's kind of a sequel to Cannery Row). I thought that book was pretty "meh", but what do I know? I thought The Winter of Our Discontent was Steinbeck's best book.

I read 'About a Boy' and loved it. I also just added 'High Fidelity' to my list of books to read. Seems like we like the same authors - if you have more suggestions, please pass them along. I would like to suggest you check anything written by Tom Robbins, though my favourite of his books is 'Even Cowgirls Get the Blues'

Ty weesin.
I know we both love Christopher Moore and Kurt v. Wondering if you're a fan of Nick Hornby? He wrote 'High Fidelity' and 'About a Boy'.
