Teachings Of The Buddha: The Way Of Practice Ch.1: Ⅱ. The Good Way of Behavior 9.2-3 - Bukkyō Dendō Kyōkai

This quote wurde hinzugefügt von brandon_cao
One should get rid of a selfish mind and replace it with a mind that is earnest to help others. An act to make another happy inspires the other to make still another happy, and so happiness is born from such an act. Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.

The Teachings Of The Buddha
The Way Of Practice
Chapter One: The Way of Purification
II. The Good Way of Behavior
It is a very good deed to cast away greed and to cherish a mind of charity. It is still better to keep one’s mind intent on respecting the Noble Path.

Those who seek Enlightenment must be careful of each of their steps. No matter how high one’s aspiration may be, it must be attained step by step. The steps of the path to Enlightenment must be taken in our everyday life.

This quote is from a Japanese book published by the Bukkyō Dendō Kyōkai society. The title would lead one to conclude that this quote was delivered by Gautama Buddha himself, but it’s more a combination of an attempt to paraphrase Ch.10 of The Sutra of Forty-two Chapters with a commentary. It is a lovely aphorism, but in the context of the book, Pindola is delivering this teaching to King Udayana and he Pindola does not actually quote Gautama Buddha, but instead delivers a teaching that embodies what the Buddha Shakyamuni teaches his disciples.
