Why don't people like my quotes??

Von jacksonm - aktualisiert: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor - 43 messages

I've posted several quotes, including some that I deliberately made to be difficult, so that people could practice specific skills like numbers.

For some reason, however, they keep getting downvoted.

Can somebody please explain what qualifications you use to decide whether you want to upvote a quote???
First thing's first. Who's this "we?" I'm pretty sure it's just you...
Second of all, what you just said was very unclear. Could you evaluate a little more? Seriously, what do you mean by that sentence? I've re-read that sentence way too many times already and I really do not know what you're trying to get at. Post a more clear response to this post afterwards. I'm interested to know what you meant.
Also- "Do some reading into this topic?" Why? This is a KeyHero forum, not a job interview.

It looks like your most downvoted one was a mushy love quote, and I see those get a lot of downvotes. I got pretty sick of them as well when I started on this site where all the teenagers think they're professional love poets. I know it's not your own love quote, but it still gets lumped in with the others.

As far as the other low ranked ones, they do look rather difficult. I am sure a small group of users on this site definitely appreciate the hard ones, but the majority do not. I saw one of your quotes was not a quote at all, but a word list. That one in my opinion does not fit the vision of this site.
By jacksonm - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

oh ok

i thought a word list might help with paying attention to what you're doing...

as for the difficult ones, i was trying to help people practice difficult things. i mean, im not very good, and typing Shakespeare would probably help me.

Oops. Just noticed a typing error in my last entry...at the end, I typed 'they're' instead of 'they'

"We" was merriam webster — he said that in the post

Clearly it's you who is experiencing issues not following the flow of this conversation. As for why you should do some reading into a topic...? That's what every intelligent person does before they engage in a discussion or debate so they don't seem ignorant to others. Try it
By ltshine - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

A typo that I think contributed to the confusion is that you said "binary" not "non-binary" when obviously non-binary people are the ones that would want you to use the word as previously described. Now for the issue with your argument. If the person's gender is identified and their pronoun of choice is gendered like in the example then use that, but if the example was "Does your child like ice cream?" and either the child's gender is unknown, being intentionally obscured or their pronouns of choice don't fit either he or she then you'd say, "Yes they like ice cream." Obviously the example isn't a great one because in most circumstances you wouldn't be hiding your child's identity and I think even the most hands off parent at least has an idea of what their child's gender is. The hypothetical was also kind of in bad faith considering the gender was very clearly established in it.

Again, there's a VERY clear difference between a debate/discussion that would require reading into and a KeyHero forum. If this was an Oxford dictionary forum, then I'd probably do some reading into it. But let's not forget this is a public website to gain typing skill. Or are you really just here to compete with others over petty reasons? Because that would seem accurate...
Not only that, but I wasn't wrong, was I? In fact, I was correct while you were incorrect. I didn't HAVE to do any reading into this subject. It should be the opposite way around here, so stop picking fights out of thin air. It's getting aggravating just responding to you.
Also, let's not forget you made a pretty large typo (which happens extremely often with you), which made your argument very unclear to understand. You're asking me to put effort into my responses when you obviously don't put any into yours.
Think about that for once, would you?
By ltshine - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

I think the thing is that if you don't want to educate yourself on the topic that's totally fine but when that's the case you should also avoid participating in the conversation. The only exception is if you intend to use the discussion to learn. It's obviously not against the rules or anything and this might not be the right forum to be arguing over pronouns but it's just courteous to not derail a conversation. I think though it's sort of a moot point because like, you get it and understand the point I'm making better than Weesin does from my estimation.
By boi - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

That is entirely correct- everything you said was true. It is important not to derail a conversation, even on a forum as simple as KeyHero. However, I guess I did know that my point was correct beforehand, so I'm not going to look into reading it. In that sense, it's kind of like raising your hand to answer a question- you know the answer, but you're not going to go grab a textbook/dictionary/etc. I hope that makes some sort of sense, because everything you said was right.
Really, though, and this is a little off topic, but- this entire discussion has already derailed. It started off with "Why don't people like my quotes?" and now we're arguing over how to use "they." Gotta love forums.
By ltshine - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

Yeah... as I was writing the "derailing" bit I realized this all sort of stemmed from me derailing it. In my defense though I didn't really think this would dissolve into this level of discourse. It was naive of me but I expected Weesin to just be like, "Oh duh yeah, they is shorter than he/she and doesn't carry the same action of enforcing an artificial gender binary."
By weesin - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

The last thing I will say in this ridiculous conversation is this: YES, the word 'they' can be used do describe a single person if the gender is unknown (as in the Bronte example). The point I was making was that I will NOT use the word 'they' to describe a non-binary person. I will not use a plural term for someone because they identify as non-binary - I would say instead, perhaps, 'that person'. Saying 'they' is ridiculous. I have absolutely zero issues with non-binary people - what I have an issue with is people making choices for themselves or changing their opinion about something and then asking people to change to accommodate them. For example, Indigenous people in North America. First we called them 'Indians' which they then found offensive so we had to start calling them 'Native North Americans'. They then found that term offensive so we had to start calling them 'First Nations'. Then that was considered offensive so we had to start calling them 'Aboriginal'. Then that was considered offensive so we have to now call them 'Indigenous' people. Everyone is so sensitive and so politically correct these days that you never know from one day to the next what is acceptable to say and what is not.

I can respect a non-binary person's wish to not be called 'he' or 'she'. But I will not be ridiculous and call a single person 'they' because they don't identify as male or female. I can compromise and call them 'that person' (a singular term)- but I will not spit in the face of the rules of the English language by referring to a single person as 'they' (a plural term).

If, as a female, I can't force people to call me a 'woman' rather than a 'broad' or a 'chick', why would non-binary people have an expectation to be called 'they' instead of 'he' or 'she'? The latter doesn't even make sense - doesn't follow the rules of the English language!
By boi - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

I think that's a great place to end this.
Sure, I don't agree with a lot of things you've said. But that's just my opinion. Both sides, at this point, are correct (at my point of view, at least). So why should we continue fighting? You have logic. I have logic. We should respect each other's decisions and views on the subject. This conversation has gone a little too far already.
I understand that this is a forum, and forums will pretty much never end- they're ongoing, different conversations. But I'm glad that we can settle this in some way.
I have to say... that was the most intense grammar fight I've ever had, haha. The internet is an odd place.

Man I can't believe I felt bad for you before Weesin. The racism and transphobia in that one post was crazy and like way worse then some people making bad posts and then giving you hell for correcting them. Changing language to better suit how the world is is just how language works. Language is suppose to evolve and change to accommodate the change in the world. Non-binary identities were not largely explored in English speaking nations for a long time and the attempts to create a new word fell flat because, "they" is already a perfect genderless pronoun that very few people have trouble using unless they genuinely believe that those identities are invalid.
By boi - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

I swear everyone on KeyHero has a time in their life where they feel bad for weesin, to then discover that you really shouldn't feel bad- at all. I learned this myself from @twofingertyper that the more you see weesin's post, the more you grow to dislike them. At first, I believed she was a "victim" (also @twofingertyper's words) as well. Go to her profile- I think that's enough explanation on its own. Then when you take her forum activity into account... it's what makes her so INfamous on KeyHero. The "Why are people so immature?" forum is a great example of this.
By weesin - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

I am neither racist nor transphobic. I am in a biracial marriage. My best friend is transgendered and is about to undergo top surgery. But I believe in being grammatically correct. As I said, I make no judgements about non-binary people - which is why I said that I would happily call them 'that person' as that is the proper way to describe a single person without referencing gender. I don't question someone's identity - that's not my business - but I do question improper use of the English language
By boi - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

Isn't respecting what people think is offensive/not offensive more important than grammar mistakes? Sure, being grammatically correct is important, but is that really going to matter that much in the grand scheme of life? Even if it may not be grammatically correct (although in this situation, it is, but I'm not going back to that conversation again), you should still respect what people want to be called.
By weesin - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

As I said, I will be happy to respect a wish to be referred to by any preferred pronoun provided it is appropriate to be used to describe a single person
By jacksonm - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

This started 6 days ago and we're still firing on all pistons, way off track

Can we all just agree to disagree, and shut up about pronouns already?

I agree with @weesin here but the whole discussion is just wearing me out
By endvisible - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

It's 2019 and peace is no longer an option. I've somehow survived the battle of KeyHero for six days, and now I'm going to make my attempt to go find food among the gunfire between grammar and gender identity. My family is starving and our crops are dwindling thanks to the flames of political disagreements.

I ran out of medicinal supplies on day three, when one user flamed my comrade @weesin in a quote that somehow got accepted, but my cross reprimands appear to have silenced their violent uprising. Now even I question the logic I once had. War is unchanging, and I have no doubts that both sides are wounded by the effects.

Perhaps the peacekeepers hold good ideals when it comes to solving this argument. I have decided to join them and leave my story here in my attempt to show people just how little such trivial issues actually matter. Among the peacekeepers are myself, moi, me, I, and some other guy whose username I forgot in the crossfire; peace be with him now. Hopefully the war will reach a ceasefire in the coming days...

By weesin - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

yeah I don't know how it got to be so unpleasant. It started out as a straight forward conversation...things go off the rails quite easily on this site
By endvisible - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

What I like about this site is that it reminds me of the simpler times of the internet, back before "dank memes" as they are today, and also back before the "trolling" outbreak. It's a lot worse in some locations, and this site is like a huge flashback to me.

I wouldn't feed the fire if I were you! Although they probably won't even care, they're still humans too, and insults go a long way. Sometimes insults make you want to fight even more (I can get that from experience...), so just lay low and keep contributing the the forum.

By weesin - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

That's not haughtiness. It's irritation at stupidity
By twofingertyper - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

Weesin, you're the most haughty person I've ever known. You're calling people--children, if I'd guess--subhumans on a typing forum. Take some steps back and try to gain a little perspective. If you could stop always making mountains out of molehills and stop trying to always elevate yourself above everybody else, then maybe people wouldn't troll you so much.
By weesin - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

It's not haughtiness to have zero patience for stupidity. And it really doesn't take any effort to feel 'elevated' compared to people who choose to conduct themselves like idiots on this site
By twofingertyper - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

Your definition of "stupidity" is when people do things you don't like. To you, somebody spamming nonsensical messages makes them subhuman. You feed off of the false sense of superiority you get over a bunch of literal children--your need for self-aggrandizement borders on the obscene. I don't want to be as preachy as you are so I'll stop with that. I just hope that you can take a few steps back from this forum, as it doesn't seem healthy to you.
By weesin - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

Actually, no. Stupidity is when people can't post a 'quote' that is not even a quote - it's some gangsta rap lyrics or some made-up garbage that is full of slang. It's when people don't know the difference between 'its' and 'it's' - or between 'their', 'there' and 'they're'. It's when people would rather spend time trolling on a typing site than improving themselves so that they can communicate properly with other human being without coming across as functionally illiterate.
By twofingertyper - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

I've been around here for long enough not to be fooled by this. Your entire perception of one's value hinges on how much they agree with you. Thus, people who take your side are mature and intelligent, whereas those who disagree with what you say or troll you on here are functionally illiterate subhumans. There are two groups of people who post in the style of iamacow et alia: trolls who know that you get irrationally angry and literal children who hardly know any better. Either way, getting so worked up about it and then using them for the sake of self-aggrandizement is dumb.

Also, what do you have against "gangsta rap?" Odd that you'd single it out when almost every quote with lyrics from a song is from pop and is just as bad if not worse.
By xeyk - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

@weesin - I like how you're so quick to berate people for making grammatical errors when I see you make them constantly on this site. It's "your," not "you're" in this context.

Your grammar skills are lacking.
By weesin - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

Thanks for pointing out my error. Though it would be due to the auto fill function rather than a lack of knowledge. I appreciate your pointing it out - I will take more care in the futur
By twofingertyper - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

Excuse me, weesin, but I couldn't help but notice that in this context, it's spelled "future," not "futur." Damned auto fill function, am I right?
By weesin - posted: 5 Jahre, 6 Monate vor

No, that was just me typing too quickly. Can't blame that on anyone/anything but myself. I appreciate your pointing out my error though. I hate making errors - so having them pointed out for me is great as it reminds me to slow down and focus more on my accuracy so as to avoid making them. Thanks very much
