I can not yet but i am trying to learn.

If you want to get better at it, put a piece of paper over your hands when you do typing exams. It's kind of annoying, but we used to do it at school and it really works. I never look down any more.

Are you kidding? You cannot type without looking? You have to be able to memorize the keys. Just memorize the home row keys.
By ac93 - posted: 11 Jahre, 9 Monate vor
For the most part. I usually do glance down every once in a while just to double check though. But I don't have to be staring at the keyboard to type a coherent sentence.
By marymill - posted: 11 Jahre, 9 Monate vor
It is just practice, you get used to it, you will see.
By silverlegend - posted: 11 Jahre, 9 Monate vor
I definitely still glance at the keyboard every once in a while. If I could do it without looking at the keyboard, I could probably type faster since I could read what I had to type next as opposed losing time looking at the keyboard.
By beckypaul - posted: 11 Jahre, 8 Monate vor
I agree it would take less time if u don't look at the key board but i do the same thing its not easy but the more u practice and learn the keyboard it will get easier!

I can type without looking at the keyboard. But i still have to look for numbers.
By eskimio - posted: 11 Jahre, 8 Monate vor
The last time I had to look at the keyboard while typing was in 2nd grade... 13 years ago.
By user35587 - posted: 11 Jahre, 8 Monate vor
I am able to do it sometimes. Usually when ever I am typing whatever it is that I am thinking. But if it is coping from something else. I do have to look down. Not really sure why though.
By sweetiejenjen - posted: 11 Jahre, 8 Monate vor
I truly believe that typing skills get better with time, practice, and effort. I was a really bad typist until I forced myself to time more accurately with each stroke. On the plus side, you get practice at typing without even realizing it...like chatting with your friends online or typing an essay for school. Don't be discouraged by the numbers; you will see progress very soon!!
By user38655 - posted: 11 Jahre, 8 Monate vor
Yes! I learnt how to do that in 4th grade :)
By user38655 - posted: 11 Jahre, 8 Monate vor
Once you do, put a tablecloth over your hands and practice like that for a while. It's really tempting to take a little peek...

I can type pretty good without looking at the keys on the letters but I still have alot of trouble with the numbers though. I keep practicing and I am getting better with the number keys. I still mess up though.
By user35096 - posted: 11 Jahre, 8 Monate vor
I was never able to until I started playing WOW. Trying to type, while auto-running, and not catching aggro, will teach anyone to touch type quickly... though the accuracy is still sketchy.

When I took typing in high school (showing my age now) I was forced to learn without looking at the keyboard or Sister Clara would take a piece of paper and cover up our hands and keyboard to stop the temptation.

I learned where the keys were on a Mac. I learned how to type on an IBM. It's all about the bumps.

Yeah, I am able to type without looking at the keyboards.... it's my speed I'm working on
By pungi-man - posted: 11 Jahre, 7 Monate vor
To type as fast as possible you have to learn to type without looking at the keyboard. No matter of the mistakes that you commit during typing without looking at the keyboard, you have to try and try till you succeed.

I can do it.... very slowly!
By spaceface129 - posted: 11 Jahre, 7 Monate vor
I can. Between 40 and 50 WPM. My accuracy is usually in 90%s.

User 39205: Just type away once you see the passage...it will appear. if it turns red, it means you got errors.

My typing looking up and down is 40 wpm but if I type without looking I can never top 30 because of all the errors :/

This is the point of touch typing - to look at the screen and NOT at the keyboard.
By user39842 - posted: 11 Jahre, 7 Monate vor
I can type without looking at my keyboard. My errors average 4 to 5, so my speed is less than what I would like. Error correction slows you down.
By dly24 - posted: 11 Jahre, 7 Monate vor
No, just, not yet :D
By thefeediddy - posted: 11 Jahre, 7 Monate vor
I can! Thankfully. Although I've recently changed my work computer from a laptop to a tower unit and it is definitely impacting on my accuracy! Speed is still the same, so I need to slow down to make less errors until I'm used to the keyboard.
By thefeediddy - posted: 11 Jahre, 7 Monate vor
This is how I learnt to touch type - had no option but to use my brain and remember where the keys were.
By narcotiic - posted: 11 Jahre, 7 Monate vor
It depends actually. I look just to make sure my hands are in the right spot. I do not death stare it, just to make sure when I go onto the next part i have my hands where they should be. If I am not too worried about typos and stuff, and I can proofread, I wont look.
By cheeseisdisgusting - posted: 11 Jahre, 7 Monate vor
You just start typing as soon as you see the text. No need to click anywhere.
By user40003 - posted: 11 Jahre, 7 Monate vor
I'm only in the 50wpm arena; probably where I've been a long time. But I cannot imagine looking at the keys. Watching my hands throws me WAY off! I'm a nurse so typing isn't a huge issue; although I get compliments on my speed. My accuracy is usually over 95%. I'm HORRID with the number and symbol keys though. I HAVE to look at them
By user40035 - posted: 11 Jahre, 7 Monate vor
Sorta kinda....
By user40038 - posted: 11 Jahre, 7 Monate vor
You can put a tea towel on the keyboard to help, but I have never really tried. I HAVE to look at the keyboard as I normally type the letter next to the one I want if I try without, but I have only been on typing test about a week and am already much faster and more accurate.
By afbwelter - posted: 11 Jahre, 7 Monate vor
You were probably taught in school where you spent a year or so perfecting this. I can type perfectly fine without looking but I hate people who act like this simply because they don't remember when they were first learning. It's hard for anyone who has not learned yet.
By afbwelter - posted: 11 Jahre, 7 Monate vor
There are bumps on the j and f letter on your keyboard. Your two pointer fingers should be on these letters and the rest of your fingers should be lined up along asd and kl; letters. Your two thumbs will be resting on the space bar. To start off just keep your hands here in this position at all times. You can still look at the keyboard when typing, but DO NOT move your hands. When you are constantly moving your hands about the keyboard it is extremely difficult to type without looking. When your hands are always in the same place your fingers will always have to move the same distance and in the same direction to touch each key, and eventually your fingers will become accustomed to this. You can also very easily go buy a program to learn typing from practically anywhere, including your computer. But if you want to learn without a program just spend a lot of time typing and ensure to learn which fingers you will have to use to get each key. Just don't get discouraged, because there ARE a lot of keys and without a program that will ease you along at a good pace the task of memorizing where every key is is daunting, as you will want to learn very quickly or all at once. If you do not get a program just realize that this is not something that will happen overnight, but something that will take a long time. I hope I could help, and spend more time on this site typing, I find typing actually very fun for me now that I'm at the point where I type in the 78 - 100 WPM range. Although I highly suggest you go get a program to help you, patience and diligence is all you really need.

Lol wow... I only type without looking at my keyboard and my average is 79-85 WPM... I just used the computer a lot at a young age... Typing became natural, and I only type with my two index fingers and occasionally, my ring finger for keys like Backspace, Shift.. etc Age:16.

It does take good several weeks to get the muscle memory to be able to type without looking
I learned thru a Lion King typing game hahah
105+ wpm should not be out of the question
You'll feel more comfortable and able to type for longer period of time if you do touch type like that, with the 2 hands and all
Its a Patience and perseverance thing

80WPM with TWO FINGERS!?? ...for real??
By afbwelter - posted: 11 Jahre, 6 Monate vor
I have to concur that this is most likely BS, but it is plausible. Silly, because if you are really getting that fast with only two fingers you can only imagine what you can do with you know, all ten of your fingers.
By adude - posted: 11 Jahre, 5 Monate vor
Yep!
Most people do that.

It should be possible to find a copy of Mavis Beacon at a local computer or office supply store for around $10. You will definitely be able to type without looking at the keyboard.
Not having to looking at the keyboard will definitely improve your speed. It's about learning the motions of the fingers, getting to use to where the keys are in space (like learning a musical instrument). Eventually the motions will become so natural that your speed will really increase because you won't be thinking about where the keys are, your fingers will just "know" where to go. Typing is not about eye-hand coordination.

I can scrape by but I make more mistakes if I don't look at the keyboard at all. Shame.
By afbwelter - posted: 11 Jahre, 5 Monate vor
You should work on it. It's definitely very helpful, and if what you're saying is true then you most likely only have a few letters that you do not know the places of or you simply aren't keeping your fingers in the same place all of the time. These are two very simple things that you can fix with a little time and determination. It's definitely worth it.
By needicla - posted: 11 Jahre, 5 Monate vor
I'll be honest with you, when I was 12, I could do that easily and reach more than a 100 WPM, it is not that hard. I'm even writing this message without looking, I can also correct my typos without knowing what they are.
By needicla - posted: 11 Jahre, 5 Monate vor
In fact, my top record, 156.59 WPM, was made without looking at the keyboard. It's really easy.

I clicked on your username. This is what came up. It's pretty neat to see other people's speeds and history and all of that. I like to see people's old speeds in comparison to their new ones. I also like to the see the accuracies go up, because one thing that happens unconsciously when your WPM is that the accuracy goes up as well. It is necessary, because once you begin typing at an unreasonable speed you have to learn to type without screwing up to type any faster. I thought that I wouldn't be able to type 100+ WPM but when I began to seriously focus on my accuracy instead of trying to type as quickly as possible I found that my WPM slowly rose as well. You also have to take into account that when I started doing this that I was on
typeracer.com and I had a 94% average accuracy. (That is a guestimate as they dont tell you your average accuracy) I have much to improve though. I'm pretty sure that one's accuracy is supposed to be 98% or something like that.
Anyway. Now, I'm rambling. Basically, just keep typing and don't get so obsessed over WPM or else this will make you angry. Also realize that if you type all day that your focus will go down and your WPM average will most likely drop even below your old WPM average, even if you have improved dramatically since then. Although you could take this as a challenge if anything. Being able to remain fully focused for long periods of time is a skill that can be extremely useful, at least I imagine it is.

You need to develop the muscle memory from using the home row keys, Typing Hero doesn't have this feature, but there are other programs out there that can help you become a quick touch typist. I am at about 55 wpm, and I actually get slowed down severely if I try to watch my hands. Best wishes to you!
