Ok, call me clueless, but how could you possibly cheat to show wpm in the 140's?

Program a bot to do the typing for you. However that would be just silly. It is also completely possible to type at 140 WPM. Tello is being silly.

He was saying if you type slower in the 40's or whatever, then you increase to the 140's. You are obviously cheating

I really don't see who you are referring to - the current leader-board is mostly the regulars, plus a few new accounts that are consistently quite fast. It is not like there is anyone who suddenly jumped from averaging 60 WPM to 140WPM, or anything close to that extreme.

It is also worth noting that among people whose professions involve significant amounts of typing ( programmers, writers, editors, engineers, etc.), 140 WPM is a very reasonable speed.

malevolarky, that's what I am talking about. Not the existence of 140's but the sudden jump from the 60's to 140 in individual profiles.

140 is ridiculously fast. It's not "reasonable". It's not unheard of, but it's not something that is easily attainable. I was in the 100-110 WPM range under the afbwelter username for a while before switching to this profile to learn how to type with the colemak configuration and things are going pretty darn well, but still, I switched because I found myself at a wall that prevented me from going any farther. I had encountered the wall before and overcome it when crossing from 80-90 to 100 WPM. However, this new wall was something that I understood to basically be my limit. I am also very dextrous. VERY. I also use the computer constantly.

160 is about the average of the fastest typists there are. It is very uncommon to find someone who can actually type at 140 WPM. My brother is a computer programmer and types at roughly 86 WPM.

I agree with you that there are practically no cheaters here on this website but the statement that 140 is "reasonable" for those of us that use the computer a lot is outlandish. I have always used the computer very often but it was never until I actively sought out to improve my speed that I made any significant change in WPM. I had been stuck at 70-80 WPM for the longest time. Using the computer mindlessly will lead to lots of bad habits. Surely there are those of us who are simply really fast, but the fact is that most of us who use the computer a lot and type a lot do not magically attain speed. There is a point at which only conscious and diligent practice is what can affect a change in your WPM.

I suppose that is true. I am usually in the 100 to 110 range on this site as well, with highs in the 120s for particularly simple quotes. I have been in the 140-150 range for the early stretches of quotes before, but I have always made an error before I can complete the quote at that speed.

I also think that speed is not just a function of how often one uses a computer. If you do frequently do transcription or data entry, that will provide a lot more typing practice than reading web pages or even programming. Additionally, working with hands in other ways seems to be a huge boon to typing speed (sort of like "cross training"). I played guitar semi-professionally for a few years, and I am an avid pianist. I suspect that those activities helped my typing speed more than typing itself did, especially since I did not start working frequently on a computer until recently.

In the end, I am not sure that improving past 100 WPM serves any purpose for most people. I feel that my brain is always playing catch up with my fingers when I am writing or programming. The only advantage I have experienced from improving my speed is that now I can dictate to myself, in a fashion, when I am trying to work through a problem or overcome writer's block. That does not mean that I would not like to be able to consistently type at 130 WPM, though. :-)

Edit: Spoke too soon. Just exceeded 140 for the first time.

I didn't even know cheating on an app like this was possible, ah well more fool them because they're not learning, just procrastinating.

Yeah, I can't help but be a bit skeptical at speeds of 230 on some typing sites... :-)
