battlefields.org - Where was the Civil War fought?
The Civil War was fought in thousands of different places, from southern Pennsylvania to Texas; from New Mexico to the Florida coast. The majority of the fighting took place in the states of Virginia and Tennessee. The Civil War was also contested on the Atlantic Ocean as far off as the coast of France, the Gulf of Mexico, and the brown water of the Mississippi River and its tributaries.

F. Scott Fitzgerald - The Great Gatsby - ch. 3
She narrowed her eyes and shivered. Lucille shivered. We all turned and looked around for Gatsby. It was a testimony to the romantic speculation he inspired that there were whispers about him from those who had found little that it was necessary to whisper about in this world.

GMHS? - World Cuisine course description

ELA classes - Charlie the Angsty Unicorn
Charlie the angsty unicorn led their group of misfits and rebels into the realm of the dividers. In their group, Ashley Marshall kept taking pictures of a hurricane waving and saying "hola" at the group. To say the very least, that day was an eventful one.

Slipknot - All Out Life
We are gathered here today to get it right. Repeat after me: "I will not celebrate mediocrity. I will not worship empty shells. I will not listen to empty noises. I will not subject myself to selected predictable choices. My time, my attention, my quality should not be bought and sold for convenience's sake - ever."

Harper Lee - Jem's outburst (in To Kill a Mockingbird)
He did not begin to calm down until he had cut the tops off every camellia bush Mrs. Dubose owned, until the ground was littered with green buds and leaves. He bent my baton against his knee, snapped it in two and threw it down. By that time I was shrieking. Jem yanked my hair, said he didn't care, he'd do it again if he got a chance, and if I didn't shut up he'd pull every hair out of my head.

Keystone Biology - active & passive transport keystone biology notes
Passive transport moves material down its concentration gradient. It requires no energy input and stops once equilibrium is reached. However, some cells require a concentration gradient to be created and maintained. Other cells must take in or expel materials too large to fit through a membrane protein. When passive transport will not get the job done, cells resort to active transport, which requires energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate).

Jihan Mour. - excerpt from a story I will never write
As they stand, it is clear they had no intention of helping. All seven of them - each and every single one. They claimed to be martyrs sent only in times of dire need, but nothing was wrong. The only reason why anything could go awry is if they do something, which is strongly suspected. But the question remains: just what do they want?

Jihan Mour. - excerpt from a story I will never write
The war was over. Any surviving soldiers were sent to the infirmary to be treated, and generals retired to their quarters for a well-earned rest. Quiet footsteps echo through the great hall, and the messenger stands in front of the Queen, whose stare is like the embers of a fire, daring him to say anything but what she wanted to hear. She had been obsessed with this day, imagining all the ways it could go. Now she wanted her answer.

Jihan Mour. - excerpt from a story I will never write
Having been alive for so long, I thought that I had already seen the world and all its wonders. At this moment, I learned that I was, in fact, correct. What I did not know was that the universe had so much more to offer. A vast, wide-open space awaits, living and changing just like all the places I had already come to know. I am excited. My journey has yet to end.

Mary Dickson - A Woman's Worst Nightmare
A woman's worst nightmare? That's pretty easy. Novelist Margaret Atwood writes that when she asked a male friend why men feel threatened by women, he answered, "They are afraid women will laugh at them." When she asked a group of women why they feel threatened by men, they said, "We're afraid of being killed."

Jihan Mour. - In the Future
I hope that, in the future, I will be able to heal from past trauma without hurting myself in the process. So much has happened in so little time and it's too much to handle. Hopefully I'll be able to face those things in the future and accept them, and myself, for what it is.

Jihan Mour. - excerpt from a story I will never write
He asks me if I will take a chance. I say yes and move to the next person. They ask if I am willing to sacrifice my life. I say yes and move to the next person. This one does not ask me anything. Instead, they hold out a small package wrapped in brown paper. "For your journey," they whisper shyly, and then I am sent off to conquer my fate.

The quietness of the room is calming, and I take take a deep breath while going through my decisions. It's strange because I was supposed to be heading to a frat party, but things change, yes? Besides, I'm not interested in getting arrested like every single person there is every single year.

Jihan Mour. - Childish
Let me ask you this: is it childish to be a child? The younger generations are expected to be mature and act like teenagers rather than elementary-schoolers, and that is exactly the problem. Let children be children. If you take someone's childhood away from them, you do unspeakable damage, and if the person finds out? No one can describe the pain they will feel.

anonymous - Shaking
My hands are shaking. Why are they shaking? I'm not sure; I ate a good lunch and I'm not nervous... at least not right now. Is it just that my body is no longer under my control? I can't help it. My fingers quiver when I hold them out, like thin branches in a breeze. This is not nice. I do not appreciate it. I really wish it would stop for a moment and let me be.

Jihan Mour. - excerpt from a story I will never write
In all of the dreams and premonitions I've had in the eighteen long years I've been alive, none have ever been so gruesome or bloody. I see walls painted with crimson splashes and streaks, viscera adorning the chandelier like strings of diamonds, and human organs displayed like trophies. I'm lucky that I work for the FBI. If I wasn't used to seeing this on the daily, I would probably hurl. But the thing is: I see death when I physically go to the crime scenes, not in my visions.

Jihan Mour. - excerpt from a story I will never write
Bones crunch under their feet like fallen autumn leaves. The wind is calm, brushing against skin with light caresses, barely there. Their hair stands on end at the feeling; it was as if someone had touched them. They turn around to find... nothing. Nothing but the smog left behind from thousands of generations who had no care for the Earth and its beauty. Not even a shadow was there, just the reminder of the desolate wasteland they had come to call their home.

Jihan Mour. - excerpt from a story I will never write
Upon seeing the grotesque figure encased in glass, I screamed. What else could I have done? I had just woken up to some monster in a giant tank in front of me. My head throbbed, the sound of blood rushing in my ears deafeningly loud. To accompany that, the heart monitor started shrieking as my heart hammered in my chest. Nurses rushed in to see what was wrong, but none of them seemed perturbed by the creature's presence. Just... What the hell is going on?

Bill Nye - The Future
Science is the future, and if you don't believe in science, then you're holding everybody back. And it's fine if you as an adult want to run around pretending or claiming that you don't believe in evolution, but if we educate a generation of people who don't believe in science, that's a recipe for disaster. We talk about the internet. That comes from science. Weather forecasting. That comes from science. The main idea in all of biology is evolution. To not teach it to our young people is wrong.
