None but the uneducated in the middle ages believed the earth was flat. The entire flat earth narrative is a 20th century myth. The scientists in Columbus' day opposed his expedition because they believed the earth was too big around to sail all the way to India. Columbus argued it was much smaller. It turns out Columbus was wrong.

Furthermore, Magellan's first expedition was in 1512, 20 years after Columbus first sailed.
